World Water Day

Join CH2M HILL in Celebrating World Water Day March 22 by Building Awareness

Since 1993, March 22 as been designated by the United Nations as International World Water Day, a day designed to focus attention on the importance of freshwater and advocate for the sustainable management of freshwater resources. Here at CH2M HILL we are committed to being an advocate for making clean water and sanitation available to people in every corner of the world, whether it is through giving back to communities where we work or volunteer or through raising funds for developing countries where 884 million people do not have access to safe drinking water and 2.6 billion are without adequate sanitation.

Each year, World Water Day highlights a specific aspect of freshwater; this year the focus is on “Water for Cities: Responding to the Urban Challenge.” Did you know that coping with the growing needs of water and sanitation services within cities is one of the most pressing issues of this century? With exploding urban population growth creating unprecedented challenges—among which provision for water and sanitation have been the most pressing and painfully felt when lacking—sustainable, efficient and equitable urban water management has never been as important as in today’s world. Learn more about urban water challenges.

This year CH2M HILL is helping to celebrate World Water Day by continuing to build awareness of this pressing issue and the need for a new urban water paradigm through a social media campaign, asking our network of friends, clients and employees to learn more about water issues and promote World Water Day to their own networks by updating their Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn status. We are also holding a photo contest to help illustrate urban water challenges and solutions; the three most “Liked” photos will be featured on CH2M HILL’s website, on the CH2M HILL Access Water Blog, in CH2M HILL’s internal news, and CH2M HILL will make a donation in the winning photographers’ names to Water For People.  You do not have to be a CH2M HILL employee to participate.

How it Works

Photo Contest: February 28 – March 25

As the theme for World Water Day 2011 is “Water for Cities: Responding to the Urban Challenge,” we encourage you to share your photos representing this topic by posting them to the CH2M HILL Facebook World Water Day Event Wall and voting on your favorites by “Liking” them between now and March 18. Be sure to invite your network to participate and regularly check the Event page over the next three weeks to see what new photos have been posted to vote for your favorites! Voting will close on March 25.

The top three most “Liked” photos will be featured the week of March 21 on CH2M HILL’s external website, on the CH2M HILL Access Water Blog, and in CH2M HILL’s internal news, with photo credits going to the photographer. In addition, to help make a physical difference in creating access to clean water and sanitation, CH2M HILL will make a donation to Water For People in the name of the winning photographers; $100 for first place, $75 for second place; and $50 for third place. You do not have to be a CH2M HILL employee to participate.

Don’t have a Facebook page but want to participate in the photo contest? Send us an email at [email protected] with your name and photo and we’ll post it on your behalf.

Photo Rights: By posting your photo to the CH2M HILL Facebook World Water Day Event Wall you are agreeing that the photo is your original artwork and are giving CH2M HILL permission to use the photo on our websites and in any promotional materials. Photo credit will be given to the photographer.
