By: Ken Thompson, CH2M Intelligent Water Solutions Deputy Director

I’ve been involved with the Smart Water Networks Forum for several years, first as a member of the SWAN Council, the governing body of the organization, and now as the Director. In my new role, I am responsible for serving as the Organization’s CFO, and a member of the Architecture Committee. Additionally, one of my personal goals is to help expand the North American membership for SWAN to allow utilities worldwide to leverage the great work being done by North American Utilities, Academia and technology providers.

SWAN is a worldwide industry forum promoting the use of data technologies in water networks, making them smarter, more efficient and more sustainable. SWAN members vary from water utilities, technology providers, engineering and consulting firms, academics and investors - who are taking a leadership role in bringing the ‘smart’ into water networks. The SWAN Forum, a not-for-profit membership organization, leverages the power of collaboration to identify the tremendous opportunities in the smart water space and jointly overcome the challenges.

In April, SWAN will hold its 6th Annual SWAN Conference in London. This year’s theme, ‘Accelerating SMART Water’, will focus on how to advance the industry, as well as boost current technologies. I encourage you to check out the conference agenda and consider registering to attend. We have an outstanding line-up of keynote presenters, including:

  • Piers Clark, Chairman, Isle Utilities
  • Jo Causon, Chief Executive, institute of Customer Service
  • Lou Cirillo, Director, Emerging Solutions Ecosystems, Cisco

Additionally, the agenda includes several panel sessions led by industry experts and water utility professionals, including a session that I will moderate on “Enhancing water quality and water safety.”

Throughout the two-day event, April 5-6, attendees will be able to interact and debate hot topics in the industry, such as accelerating innovation and investment, cybersecurity, engaging outside stakeholders, change management and more. I hope to connect with you there!

Ken Thompson brings more than 32 years of experience in water quality and water sector security, both as a utility manager and as a consultant, to his role on the SWAN Council. He is a Senior Technology Fellow at CH2M, and serves as the Deputy Director of the Intelligent Water Solutions team for water and wastewater systems.

“I am passionate about developing and implementing smart water solutions to help our clients and utilities understand the relationship between cost, quality and supply to improve water resource management, especially as environment and market conditions put stress on our infrastructure and natural resources,” said Ken. One of the coolest projects I have been involved with was developing and implementing real-time water quality monitoring systems, such as a prototype monitor for biotoxins, viruses, protozoans, and bacteria in water distribution systems.

Prior to joining CH2M, Ken worked for public utilities in water, wastewater, and recycled water system operations, process evaluation, water quality, and regulations.
