The Smart Water Networks Forum (SWAN) announced the appointment of two new SWAN Council members, including our Ken Thompson. Ken serves at CH2M HILL’s Intelligent Water Solutions deputy director, working closely with innovative U.S. water utilities to implement smart water technology solutions.

Smart water technologies are typically invisible to most of us; however, whether you realize it or not, these technologies play an important role in our daily lives, ensuring we have a constant, high quality, affordable supply of water.

For more than two decades, I have been working closely with U.S. water utilities on developing innovative solutions to address some of the most complex challenges. Smart technologies have been on the market for years, but many utilities still grapple with how to take advantage of existing technologies designed to make water networks smarter, more efficient and more sustainable. Understanding the benefit of incorporating smart water technologies, I enjoy consulting with water utilities to develop a comprehensive and holistic solution to help them along their smart water journey; which is one of the primary reasons I became involved in SWAN—The Smart Water Networks Forum.

SWAN is a worldwide industry forum promoting the development and adoption of new innovative technologies in water networks, making them smarter, more efficient, and more sustainable. SWAN members are industry pioneers - technology innovators, water utilities, investors, academics, engineering and consulting firms - who are taking a leadership role in bringing the ‘smart’ into water networks. The SWAN Forum, a not-for-profit membership organization, leverages the power of collaboration to identify the tremendous opportunities in the smart water space and jointly overcome the challenges.  Through the SWAN Workgroups, members are shaping industry language and thinking going forward and creating practical, actionable tools for the industry.

Recently, SWAN appointed me as a member of the SWAN Council, the governing body of the organization. I am looking forward to continuing my involvement with SWAN as one of the executive council members and sharing my experience and expertise with the SWAN Council. Leveraging my understanding of the U.S. market and bringing insights from the consultant and the utility perspective, I believe I will help enrich the diversity of perspectives on the board.

I invite you to learn more about SWAN and perhaps, whether you’re a water utility, technology company, investor, analyst, regulator and/or academic, consider joining SWAN and share your voice to help advance the smart water sector. We would love to have you working with us!

Ken Thompson brings more than 30 years of experience in water quality and water sector security, both as a utility manager and as a consultant, to his role on the SWAN Council. He is a Technology Fellow at CH2M HILL, and recently served as the program manager for our security initiative for water and wastewater systems.

“I am passionate about developing and implementing smart water solutions to help our clients and utilities understand the relationship between cost, quality and supply to improve water resource management, especially as environment and market conditions put stress on our infrastructure and natural resources,” said Ken. “One of the coolest projects I have been involved with was developing and implementing real-time water quality monitoring systems, such as a prototype monitor for biotoxins, viruses, protozoans, and bacteria in water distribution systems.”

Prior to joining CH2M HILL, Ken worked for public utilities in water, wastewater, and recycled water system operations, process evaluation, water quality, and regulations.
