Water Tools for Business
Secure water resources and the ability to discharge have emerged as critical issues affecting economic activity, development, and business around the world. Individual companies face the challenge of identifying their most significant water-related risks and the steps they should take to cost-effectively manage risk, report water performance and capitalize on opportunities.
From the extractive industries to footwear and apparel production, CH2M HILL and Halcrow have worked with hundreds of companies around the world to promote sustainable water management in their operations, planned projects and supply chains. Our extensive team of 30,000 staff in more than 90 countries provides unparalleled global understanding of local water issues and cost-effective solutions.
CH2M HILL – Developer of the World’s Leading Water Tools for Business
CH2M HILL has worked with global business organizations and companies to develop the world’s leading water tools for business. These tools are available free in the public domain on the organizations’ websites along with supporting documentation to help companies use the tools and take action from outcomes. The tools are designed to answer questions at focused levels and have sector customizations. Supporting nomenclature, data continuity and software codes were developed by CH2M HILL to be compatible between the Global and Local Water Tools to ensure the user’s ability to transfer data between the tools.

Global Water Tool (GWT) provides global business portfolio water assessment with links to external databases and maps. It answers questions such as:
–How many sites are in extremely water scarce areas?
–Which sites are in greatest risk areas?
–How many employees live in countries that lack access to water supply
or sanitation?
GWT Sector Customization for Thermal, Solar, Wind, Geothermal, and Hydropower Production
–Cooling water is considered separately from other process water.
–Sector-relevant intensity metrics are created.

GWT sector customization to help oil and gas companies map their water use and assess risks for their overall global portfolio of sites considering each part of the oil and gas value chain:
–Production –Drilling
–Transport-Terminals –Oil Sands
–Gas Processing –Petrochemical
–Refining
Customizations include:
–Produced water is considered separately from other process water.
–IPIECA and sector-relevant intensity metrics are created.
Webinar on the IPIECA Global Water Tool for Oil and Gas
To enhance the uptake and communication of the IPIECA Global Water Tool for Oil and Gas webinars were organized in March 2012 to provide a demo of the practical application of the tool illustrated via a hypothetical ‘Universal Oil Company’ example. CH2M HILL Vice President Jan Dell ran the webinar, which is available for viewing below.

WaterMatch: A Social Network Leading a Water Reuse Revolution
WaterMatch is a grassroots, goodwill initiative launched by CH2M HILL in November 2011. The site uses the power of social networking and geospatial mapping to connect water generators with water users to promote the beneficial reuse of municipal effluent by industry and agriculture. Recognizing the importance of water reuse, and the low rates of implementation around the world, corporations, organizations and universities are partnering with WaterMatch to promote reuse and sustainable water management through a variety of actions. The site has more than 21,000 water resue sources mapped and is growing daily.
Our motive is simple: to promote beneficial water reuse. We invite everyone to join us and help make matches happen, because not water should be wasted. Learn more.
