Welcome to Access Water, Our Client Newsletter
Hello, I’m Bob Bailey, President of CH2M HILL’s Water Business Group. We’re very pleased to launch a quarterly newsletter aimed at keeping in touch with you, our valued clients. We hope the newsletter serves as a source for us to exchange ideas, best practices and to highlight the progressive work you’re doing to ensure water resources for your customers and future generations. To facilitate this discussion, we’re also launching a water blog on our CH2M HILL website. Please check the Access Water Blog weekly for innovation and insight on all things water.

Hats Off To. . .
Congratulations to PUB on Global Water Award and its third annual Singapore International Water Week Conference
CH2M HILL is proud to be part of an exclusive group invited to be founding sponsors of Singapore International Water Week. The conference signals PUB’s strong commitment to developing the water industry in Singapore, building overseas linkages and partnerships, and sharing its experience and knowledge with the world.
As a long-term partner of PUB, CH2M HILL has been involved in various projects that help Singapore implement its innovative water resource management programs. Singapore is a tremendous example of how a country has taken a holistic approach to sustainable water management, and the world has taken notice. PUB’s Changi NEWater Plant was recently named Water Reuse Project of the Year at the 2010 Global Water Awards. Its Deep Tunnel Sewerage System was crowned Water Project of the Year at the Global Water Awards in 2009; and it received the Stockholm Industry Water Award in 2007.
CH2M HILL looks forward to sharing its knowledge, expertise, and vision with other participants during Singapore International Water Week June 28 – July 2 to collaboratively address the challenges of developing sustainable water solutions for communities around the globe.
Water For People – providing people access to safe water and sanitation
Each May, CH2M HILL holds its annual Water For People Workplace giving campaign. It’s a charity many of our clients and colleagues support. Around the world, 884 million people do not have access to safe drinking water, and 2.6 billion are without adequate sanitation. Every day, 6,000 people die as a result of water-related illnesses, and the majority are children. We won’t solve this inequity, but we can influence policy – and support organizations who are working on it. Last year CH2M HILL broke a Water For People workplace giving record and donated $229,000 to Water For People. All our donation numbers are not in yet, but we hope to surpass last year’s contribution. Not only do our employees donate their money to Water For People, they donate their time. When Jeff Friesen, a Water Business Group project engineer, discovered the Water For People World Water Corps®, he knew he had to get involved and that his contribution could make a difference. In 2009, he served as a World Water Corps® volunteer on two trips to Malawi, Africa. Check out Jeff’s story in the video below.
Celebrating projects and achievements coast to coast
This spring open houses and groundbreakings were held at six CH2M HILL project sites across the United States, showcasing very unique projects at various stages of completion. From water and wastewater treatment plants in New Jersey, Florida, and Las Vegas, to a water reuse facility in Central California, to a water intake and a fish passage improvement project in Northern California, the CH2M HILL water business group has been busy not only leading the design/build of these innovative projects but also inviting local communities to take part in celebrating the improvements and benefits that these projects provide.
On May 18, the City of North Las Vegas, CH2M HILL, and NEWCOM, Inc., held an open house to highlight progress on the city’s new water reclamation facility. Nearly 400 people attended the event including local dignitaries and construction site staff.
Scheduled to be operational by May 2011, the state-of-the-art water reclamation facility will provide reclaimed water for use in industrial and recreational applications, including turf irrigation for golf courses, schools, and municipal parks. The new facility was designed and will be constructed to meet existing wastewater effluent requirements, and provision has been made for future expansion to 50 million gallons per day. It is the largest membrane bioreactor wastewater treatment facility in North America. Construction began in December 2008. The projected $257 million facility is currently ahead of schedule and under budget.
“We have a strong project safety culture with dedicated commitment from all levels,” said CH2M HILL CEO Lee McIntire. “Our safety performance metrics are a reflection of the behavior and discipline of every worker, foreman, and superintendent in the field. We continue to take a proactive approach to safety, ensuring we deliver a quality project while holding worker safety as our top priority.”
