		<description>Mr. Huehmer writes: Most of the history of pretreatment in seawater application has used direct filtration consisting of coagulation, in-pipe flocculation and media filtration.  Increasingly, as we build plants in estuarial waters or at sites prone to Red Tide events, we have seen clarification technologies applied upstream of the filtration step.   While the Pt Lisas Desalination Plant (Trinidad) uses a lamella settling process, most seawater desalination plants incorporating clarification are using high rate dissolved air flotation systems. This trend is being driven by several factors, including lower foot-print, increased removal of phytoplankton and other small marine organisms, and increased organic removal due to the affinity of organics to the air/water interface.   I don&#039;t see conventional clarification becoming common in seawater applications due to the high foot-print and more expensive admixes required for seawater applications.  In cases where there are high settlable solids content without algae/phytoplankton there may be a place for lamella processes.</description>
